The Aegean Sea island of Santorini belongs to the Cyclades family. The island is the most famous of all the Greek Islands and is the number one summer destination worldwide. White Beach, another stunning beach, can also be reached by boat, making it the perfect destination for those who love the outdoors.
After visiting the Akrotiri archaeological site, you should continue your day trip to Santorini. As one of the essential Minoan sites, it dates back to the Bronze Age. Connections from Egypt to Syria have been documented at the Akrotiri site. The site dates back to approximately 4,000 years before the island developed as a commercial center. The town was covered in volcanic ash following a massive volcanic eruption and thus is referred to as the Greek Pompeii. The archaeologists have completed extensive excavations there, making it one of Greece's most popular tourist attractions.
A day in Santorini isn't complete without a visit to Oia. The village of Fira is Santorini's most famous. It is well known as an area of picturesque Greek architecture, luxury hotels, and fantastic sunset views. Traditional Greek houses and narrow streets characterize the town. One of the city's main attractions is the Maritime Museum, which includes a library and the remains of a Venetian fortress, and historical maritime exhibits. Across from the port, you can find Ammoudi, which is reached by descending 300 steps. It has picturesque views, fantastic seafood restaurants, and small boats. In Oia, you should hike up the hill to get the most lovely sunset view, which can be seen all over Instagram. It's not on everyone's list to explore Santorini's volcano, but you will love it when you get there. Black-gray sand beaches and otherworldly scenery can be found here. Don't forget to bring water, sunblock, and a hat if you like weird landscapes. Although we'll be honest with you - the dark sand gets very hot as you hike, so you probably wouldn't have enjoyed the hike there on a hot day. Consider the high temperatures carefully if you plan to visit during peak season.
Santorini's highest point is Prophet Elias, a 567-meter peak that stands at 1860 feet tall. Pyrgos, a traditional village on the island, is about 3km away. The Holy Monastery of Prophet Elias stands at the summit of the hill. Interestingly, this mountain is the only one that used to exist before the eruption of the volcano, making it the oldest part of the island. The monastery is inaccessible by public transport or local buses. Therefore, renting a car or scooter is the only way to reach the location. Care should be taken while driving up the mountain because the road is treacherous. An impressive nine-bell tower marks the entrance of the Monastery. Monasteries are generally closed to the general public, but exceptions can be made. Despite this, you are welcome to visit the church anytime (9 am to sunset daily, except Sundays).
Once you view the church on the island, the views can be enjoyed in peace. It is easier to comprehend the shape of Santorini when you view it from this vantage point. Seeing the different forms will genuinely amaze you. It is a gorgeous sight. On one side, you have plain fields, and on the other hand, there is Oia with its white houses.
The best time for Santorini tourist season: is April to early November. There is no extreme weather in January and February in Santorini (and Greece). Still, the weather can be unpredictable (but don't worry, there may not be any extremes). For warm weather and fewer crowds, consider hopping to the island from September to October and April to May.
