Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, cruise lines have offered thousands of future cruise credits to passengers instead of refunds for missed sailings. The figure for issuing FCC is much higher than at any other time in the history of cruising. As the name suggests, a future cruise credit is a coupon good for a future voyage.

What is Future Cruise Credit?

Future cruise credit (FCC) from a cruise line is comparable to shop credit. Often, a cruise line may take the cost of a canceled trip and issue it as a form of gift voucher to use toward arranging a new sailing instead of a direct cash refund.

Nonrefundable future cruise credit is a typical form of payment when cruises are affected or canceled or if customers receive compensation for whatever reason.

The amount of FCC that a cruise passenger is eligible for is determined by deducting taxes, fees, upgrades, and any other purchases, such as excursions, from the base cost that they made.

How Can I Use My Future Cruise Credit?

  • Depending on how quickly the cruise line processes it, a future cruise credit is usually sent by email within a few weeks.
  • Individuals can use the coupon with or without a travel agent. Usually, the credit is divided according to the charges made by each visitor on the reservation.
  • If you make a new reservation, you can apply your whole FCC against the base cruise fee. However, this is only applicable if you make the reservation yourself.
  • You cannot use a future cruise credit to pay for another person's cruise because it is non-transferable. Additionally, you cannot pay the first deposit with it.
  • The balance will be issued as a new FCC voucher if your credit balance is greater than the price of the new voyage (but likely the same end date).
  • After the end date, any unused part of the credit will be lost. You will need to pay the difference out of pocket if the credit amount is less than the new cruise ticket.

Final Words

You must note that most leading cruise lines provide Future Cruise Credit, this includes Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, and others.
