Book Cruises to Malta

The island of Malta is a small European nation located in the Mediterranean Sea. It is less than a hundred miles south of Sicily, Italy, and east of Tunisia. It consists of three islands – the main island Malta and two other smaller islands of Gozo and Comino. This popular destination is known for its warm climate and breathtaking landscapes that serve as locations for major film productions. As a result of its strategic importance in history, the Maltese archipelago has always strived to maintain dominance in the Mediterranean. It has become a vital freight transshipment point, a financial center, and a tourist destination in the last 15 years.

Best Things to do in Malta

Malta Island has it all, ranging from museums to fishing trips to diving opportunities, or you can relax and take advantage of the cafes and restaurants that serve freshly caught seafood. Apart from these things, you can also enjoy doing the things mentioned below.

1. Comino Island's Crystal Lagoon

Malta's third island – Comino Island, is famous for the blue lagoon and some crystal clear aqua waters. But even better than that is the Crystal Lagoon which is seclusive yet breathtaking. The Crystal Lagoon is even better on Comino Island. There is hardly any tourism at the secluded Crystal Lagoon on the southern coast of Comino. What's more, the water is stunning, just like the Blue Lagoon! Enjoy some snorkeling near the shores and bask in the sun without any crowds of tourists.

2. Gozo Island

If you don't have time for anything more than a day trip to Gozo, it usually tops the list of the best things to do in Malta. Although public transportation is available, you'll be better off renting a car or joining a hop-on hop-off tour. Depending on your interests, your itinerary may include the Ggantija Temples, the historic fortified city of Victoria, Ramla Bay, Dwerja Bay, and the Basilica of Ta' Pinu. The main reasons to visit include its rugged coastlines, secluded beaches, and cultural attractions. Moreover, don't forget to visit the Citadella in Victoria, the fortified city. It was designed in the Byzantine and Roman Styles and had some to offer according to an architectural wonder.

3. Azure Window

Underwater limestone cave with octopi, fireworms, morays, and sea horses is heaven on earth for scuba divers, freedivers, and snorkelers. The Azure Window is also an impressive rock formation, rising 100 meters above the Blue Hole - a perfect backdrop for photos and cliff diving. Recently, a storm on the island caused the Azure Window to collapse, resulting in the large arch that dropped into the water. Sadly, this place is disappearing, but that's part of nature! If you enjoy diving, now is the perfect time to witness the magnificent Azure window arch that crashed into the ocean. In Malta, it is one of the best places to do such activities. Don't dive unless you've arranged it with the locals sincethis underwater terrain is still forming. A reckless diver will not be appreciated.

4. Ggantija Temples

The Ggantija Temples are a megalithic temple complex from the Neolithic on the Mediterranean Island of Gozo. It is among the oldest free-standing stone buildings in the world. This UNESCO World Heritage site contains two ancient temples built before the famous standing stones at Stonehenge. Construction took place between 3600 and 3200 B.C., falling into disuse around 2500BC. They were rediscovered in the nineteenth century. Originally, Ggantija was named after the Maltese word ggant, which meant giant, since the people of Gozitans believed that giants built the temples. Don't get surprised after seeing the size of the limestone blocks from which it was constructed. Some of them are longer than five meters and heavier than fifty tons.

5. Popeye Village

Popeye Village in Malta is a real-life setting that you can visit. The location is set in the beautiful Anchor Bay, so it's a stunning place to visit regardless of whether you've seen the Disney movie or not. This quirky, tackily designed little village stayed on Popeye's island after being built for the film. Just like the character Popeye, the place is also unique and one of the major tourist attractions of Malta. Visitors can have fun by visiting this fun place, playing mini-golf, eating popcorn, taking travel photos, and admiring the views.

Best Time to Visit in Malta

Malta is best visited between April and June, when the weather is pleasant, avoiding winter chills and summer crowds. The climate of Malta is temperate because it is a Mediterranean state. Summer is an excellent time to visit Malta to enjoy endless sunshine, but this is the peak tourist season. Visitors who want this season can visit Malta in November and December as it does not get too cold and still has that winter chill.
