MSC Cruises Expands LNG Fleet and AI-Powered Sustainable Cruise Ship Innovation

MSC Cruises is rapidly advancing its global fleet strategy with a strong focus on sustainability, fuel innovation, and next-generation ship design. As part of its long-term environmental roadmap, the company is investing heavily in LNG-powered vessels while preparing for even more advanced technologies that will define cruising over the next three decades.

According to MSC Cruises’ Chief Energy Transition Officer Michele Francioni, ships being designed and built today will not enter service for approximately five years and are expected to operate for 35 years or longer. This long operational lifespan makes future-proof design a critical priority, especially as global sustainability regulations continue to evolve.

Francioni emphasized that modern shipbuilding is no longer just about meeting current environmental targets, it is about consistently exceeding them throughout a vessel’s entire lifecycle.

LNG as a Core Fuel Strategy for Cleaner Cruise Operations

MSC Cruises continues to position liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a central pillar of its sustainability strategy. Rather than treating LNG as a temporary solution, the company views it as a proven and reliable marine fuel that supports both environmental performance and operational efficiency.

Currently, MSC Cruises operates three LNG-powered ships, including:

• MSC Euribia
• MSC World Europa
• MSC World America

These vessels demonstrate the company’s commitment to reducing emissions while maintaining high levels of performance and guest comfort.

Francioni noted that 2025 marked a strong year for LNG adoption in Europe, with MSC not only meeting its fuel implementation targets but also generating a surplus in both LNG and bio-LNG usage. This achievement reinforces the company’s confidence in its fuel strategy and long-term sustainability direction.

Expansion of LNG-Powered World-Class Ships

MSC Cruises is significantly expanding its LNG fleet under its World Class ship program. Six additional LNG-powered vessels are planned for introduction over the coming years, strengthening the company’s position as a leader in low-emission cruise technology.

Key upcoming ships include:

• MSC World Asia (2026)
• MSC World Atlantic (2027)

These vessels will further enhance MSC’s capacity while continuing its transition toward cleaner maritime operations.

In addition to the World Class expansion, MSC Cruises has also placed orders for four next-generation ships under a new class known as “New Frontier.” Deliveries for these advanced vessels are expected to begin in 2030.

While specific fuel systems for the New Frontier class have not yet been fully disclosed, MSC has confirmed that these ships will incorporate alternative fuel technologies designed to meet future sustainability demands.

Balancing Innovation, Safety, and Crew Training

As MSC Cruises introduces increasingly advanced technologies into its fleet, the company acknowledges the importance of maintaining safety as a top priority. Francioni highlighted that innovation must never compromise the safety of passengers, crew members, or coastal communities.

One of the biggest challenges, he explained, is ensuring that crew members are adequately trained to operate and manage complex new systems onboard modern cruise ships. As vessels become more technologically advanced, workforce readiness becomes just as important as engineering innovation.

This focus on training and operational safety ensures that MSC’s sustainability transition is both effective and responsible.

Artificial Intelligence Driving Energy Efficiency in Cruise Operations

Beyond fuel innovation, MSC Cruises is also investing in artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize onboard systems and improve energy efficiency. One of the most successful applications of AI has been managing air conditioning systems, which represent a major source of energy consumption on cruise ships.

These systems can consume several megawatts of power, making optimization extremely valuable. By using AI-powered analytics, MSC was able to process millions of data points related to cooling systems and operational performance.

Through this analysis, the company optimized chiller water concentration levels, resulting in significant energy savings across its fleet.

Francioni explained that cruise ships are highly complex environments, and the key challenge lies in identifying the most effective applications of AI and other emerging technologies that deliver real operational benefits.
