AmaWaterways Responds to Low Water Levels on the Danube and Rhine

By CruiseBooking.com Editorial Team

AmaWaterways is speaking directly to guests about the historically low water levels currently affecting parts of the Danube and Rhine rivers, acknowledging that the headlines are raising real concerns about upcoming sailings.

In a recent update shared on social media, the river cruise line said it understands why travelers are on edge. A vacation that’s been anticipated for months or years naturally comes with questions when conditions on the water start changing, the company noted. It added that an entire team, including its executive leadership, meets regularly with one goal in mind: protecting guests’ trips whenever possible.

AmaWaterways pointed to its nearly 25 years in the river cruise business as proof that this isn’t new territory. Fluctuating water levels have come up before, and the company said its default approach is not to cancel sailings if it can help it. Instead, teams work to rework itineraries, line up alternative transportation, and find other ways to keep trips on track.

That said, the line acknowledged that some situations call for building an entirely new itinerary from scratch. Even then, AmaWaterways maintains that these adjusted journeys can be just as rewarding as the originally planned routes. Guests may also find themselves switching to a different ship to get around a low-water stretch, allowing the cruise to continue with as little disruption as possible.

To keep travelers in the loop, the company said it has rolled out a broader communications effort — spanning email updates, dedicated web pages with real-time information, expanded in-app messaging, and additional contact center support — so questions can be answered quickly and guests can be reached proactively when something changes.

Because no two cruises face the exact same conditions, AmaWaterways said its response is decided on a case-by-case basis. River levels and weather can shift quickly, meaning some calls simply can’t be made until closer to departure, when the most current information is available.

The company also acknowledged that the impact of low water isn’t limited to travelers. The communities along these rivers are feeling the effects too, and AmaWaterways said its thoughts are with the residents, businesses and partners who depend on these waterways.
