When tensions were high between King Harald I of Norway and King Athelstan of Wessex, the great Norse sailors Helgrim and Osfrid delivered on behalf of Harald the gift of a ship to Athelstan. The vessel is said to have had purple sails and gilded shields along the gunwale. The gesture is seen as the start of a long and productive relationship between the two nations.
Tipping & Gratuities for shipboard crew, local guides, and drivers are included in your cruise programs.
Our intimate, all-veranda ships offer a wide variety of staterooms for your selection. It’s been said that the best way to know a culture is through its food and wine. Both engage your senses and provide a window into the traditions and essence of a land. Viking's trained chefs are passionate about food and committed to providing a complete culinary experience. The ships’ dining areas are hospitable and inviting; the service is friendly, attentive and personalised. Menu selections include regional dishes and contemporary cuisine to offer a variety of flavours designed to suit any palate. You have choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Not just in food selection, but also in where and how you enjoy them. Greet the morning with a croissant and cappuccino on deck, or begin your day with a sumptuous buffet breakfast. Have a casual lunch or dinner al fresco, or join friends in the restaurant. Open seating allows you to mingle with the same guests every evening or meet someone new each day.
Casual yet elegant, the Restaurant is where all meals are served during your cruise. You’ll gaze at the breathtaking scenery through the Restaurant’s panoramic windows as you dine on regional specialties and always available American classics. You’ll also enjoy open seating, so you can share the day’s discoveries with your favorite guests or discover someone new each day.
Revolutionary in concept and design, this spacious outdoor seating area at the bow of the ship is perfect for having a casual meal al fresco, meeting friends for drinks or reading a book, all while enjoying breathtaking views and basking in the fresh air.
As with your stateroom, the public areas are designed to make the most of the splendid views. Whether from the sun deck, the Panorama Lounge or the restaurant, a river cruise provides uninterrupted sightseeing, from the time the morning mist rises from the water to when the setting sun announces the end to another remarkable day.
With floor-to-ceiling glass windows and large, comfortable chairs, the Observation Lounge is the heart of the ship - a gathering place for guests to view the scenery, have a drink, take in lectures and lore, and enjoy local music.

Due to the nature of Viking cruises, they do not maintain specific facilities or services for children aboard cruise vessels. In the circumstances you and all members of your party must be aged 18 or over on or before the day you are scheduled to embark on the cruise vessel.
Viking welcomes disabled guests; however, guests must realize there are inherent risks associated with traveling on board ships that are unique to cruise travel. For people who are ill, or have a mental or physical disability or impairment, the risks can be more significant. Guests must be able to independently move around the ship in case of an emergency or rough seas, deal with the lack of immediate access to medical services in certain parts of the world, and acknowledge that access to some areas of the ship and ports of call may be limited or impossible. Shore excursions may require the ability to traverse cobblestones or go up and down stairs. We reserve the right to determine whether a guest is fit to travel and to deny boarding in the event that a guest represents a risk to themselves or to the safety and well-being of those on board the ship.
When you make your reservation, please advise us of any disability that will require special attention while sailing on a Viking cruise and provide a completed Fit to Travel Form along with a physician’s letter. Should you have any medical, physical or other special needs, check the fleet information on our website to gain an understanding of the layout of any particular ship and contact a Viking Expert at 1-877-668-4546 (1-877-66VIKING) directly with additional questions and to obtain a copy of our policy statement.
In most cases, we can. Every meal has vegetarian options and the chefs will make reasonable efforts to accommodate special requests. Guests requiring special meals (low salt, diabetic, gluten-free or low cholesterol) should alert us 90 days prior to departure over the phone at 1-877-668-4546 (1-877-66VIKING) or online on the Dietary Restrictions page in your My Viking Journey account. Guests should also inform the Maître d’ when on board.
While we take steps to minimize the risk of cross contamination, we cannot guarantee an allergen-free kitchen.
All guests must be 18 years old on or before the day they are scheduled to embark on their cruise; we do not maintain facilities or services on board for younger individuals.
During the day, dress is casual including shorts (if the season is warm), slacks or jeans and comfortable shoes for walking tours. There are no “formal nights†in the evening; recommended evening dress is “elegant casual.†For ladies, this may include a dress, skirt or slacks with a sweater or blouse; and for gentlemen, trousers and a collared shirt. A tie and jacket are optional.
Some shore excursions visit religious sites that require modesty of dress. To avoid being denied entry, we recommend men wear long pants and refrain from sleeveless shirts; and for women, clothing that covers the knees and tops that are not sleeveless or too revealing.
