Sineus was Rurik's brother and sailed with him from Scandinavia to Kiev. According to a 12th-century primary chronicle, Sineus settled in Belozero, now Belozersk, and set aside these lands for the growing Kievan Rus. One of Russia's oldest cities, Belozero is called "the gateway to the northern waterways of Russia".
