Disney Wish Becomes a Classroom for Bahamian Students

By Cruise Booking Team

Students from the Bahamas embarked on the Disney Wish to learn first-hand about careers at sea from Disney Cruise Line crew members.

A Disney Cruise Line two-week summer camp was recently held at the LJM Maritime Academy in Nassau, The Bahamas, for over 25 students ages 10 to 13. Students learned about maritime careers onboard as well as the local and global maritime industries.

On board the Disney Wish, the students enjoyed a tour of the ship, met crew members in various roles, and learned about the ship’s history. Additionally, they visited the bridge of the ship’s command center.

It was a lot of fun to see the Disney Wish. The moment we stepped onto the bridge, I just dropped my jaw. In the summer camp program at LJM Maritime Academy, Quinn met the captain, the pilot, and other crew members. I’m looking forward to learning more, so I can be a captain one day,” Quinn said.

During their tour of the ship, the students met Captain Minnie and other Disney characters and played in the theaters and youth spaces.

The Bahamas is a great place for young people to explore careers at sea and we want to inspire them to do so. In sponsorship of the LJM Maritime Academy summer camp, we’re introducing young Bahamians to maritime opportunities early on so they know it’s an option for them,” said Joey Gaskins, director of public affairs, Disney Cruise Line. Our goal is to show them first-hand how exciting maritime careers can be, and to encourage them to join our growing Disney Cruise Line team.”

Through its scholarship program and sponsorship of our summer camp, Disney Cruise Line has continued to be an excellent partner to LJM Maritime Academy, said Dr. Brenda Cleare, principal. These young people are so important because this camp opens up new horizons for them as they begin to enter high school and begin to think seriously about their futures.”
