MSC to carry out Expansion of its Ocean Cay Marine Reserve

By Cruise Booking Team

MSC Cruises recently unveiled plans for Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve’s infrastructure development in the Bahamas, as outlined in a press release.

The formal agreement, signed in Bimini and attended by the Prime Minister, The Honourable Philip Davis, the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation, Honourable Chester Cooper, and other officials, signifies upcoming upgrades to the island. These enhancements aim to benefit MSC Cruises’ guests, staff accommodations, operational efficiency, and environmental preservation.

MSC Cruises detailed the improvement plans, including expanded guest amenities such as an excursion center for water sports and island tours, a dedicated sea dive and snorkel center, additional food and beverage outlets, and various other facilities.

A focal point of the development is the MSC Foundation’s Marine Conservation Centre, set to serve as a hub for biologists, coral reef specialists, and students. This center will feature interactive pavilions, a lecture hall, coral exhibition tanks, and educational opportunities for passengers, highlighting the significance of marine ecosystems.

Ocean Cay currently hosts the MSC Foundation’s Super Coral Program, a pivotal initiative in understanding coral reef resilience in the region. The program supports graduate research focused on mitigating thermal resilience changes in tropical Western Atlantic coral reefs. Thriving coral nurseries house endangered reef-building corals, signifying hope for ecosystem restoration.

The development plan includes a third solar farm to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions, an advanced wastewater treatment plant, and landscaping efforts with native vegetation to bolster the island’s sustainability. Additionally, an expansion in accommodation will lead to an increase in staff numbers from 150 to 280.

MSC Cruises reiterated its commitment to social responsibility by supporting the LJM Maritime Academy and the University of The Bahamas, investing in maritime training for Bahamians pursuing careers in the industry.
