Which Cabins Should You Avoid on Carnival Horizon?

Do not choose forward interior cabins with window views from Decks 6, 7, 9 and 10, as well as porthole and bunk-bed cabins from Decks 1 and 2, cabins from Deck 9 below the Lido pools and bars, cabins from Deck 11 below the WaterWorks park and fitness center on Deck 12, Havana cabins from Deck 5 near the Havana Bar, and any cabins located next to elevator banks, stairs and self-service laundry facilities. Do not opt for connecting cabins if you travel with your partner.

All of these rooms are not defective. The ship has a capacity of 3,960 passengers double occupancy in 1,965 rooms, and most of them are quite comfortable for a week. These are only the rooms that have windows which are viewing at something except the ocean, an attraction above running late, or constant foot traffic.

The catch is that Carnival prices staterooms by category, not by individual room number. Two cabins in the same category at the same price can give you very different nights of sleep. That is why the room number matters as much as the category. Carnival Horizon belongs to the Vista class and was constructed in 2018. It is the sister ship of the Carnival Vista and Carnival Panorama ships. The ship has 14 decks, and 13 of them are cabin decks. The best method of finding a bad cabin is knowing what deck is above and below yours.

Forward Interior Cabins with Picture Windows

Cabins to avoid: 6201 to 6206, 7201 to 7208, 9201 to 9203, and 10201 to 10206.

Carnival sells these as interior staterooms with a picture window, category 4J. The window faces forward onto the outdoor observation walkway at the bow, which is open to every guest on the ship. People gather there for sailaway, for photos and during scenic cruising, so your view is of other passengers rather than the ocean.

The glass is tinted, so nobody can see into your room during daylight hours. That protects your privacy, and it also cuts down what you can see out. Book one of these only if you want extra light and floor space at an interior price and you accept the trade.

Porthole and Bunk-Bed Cabins on Decks 1 and 2

Cabins to avoid: 1201, 1202, 1205 and 1206, plus 1209, 1210, 1214 and 1215 on Deck 1. On Deck 2, the same applies to 2207, 2211, 2212, 2216 and 2217, plus 2220 and 2221.

Porthole cabins provide you with two small round portholes instead of a large window. Porthole cabins are located very close to the waterline. Bunk-bed cabins have the smallest dimensions of all the cabins on board and have top and bottom bunks instead of queen-size convertible beds.

Both types of accommodations would be suitable for a short budget cruise, but neither of them is a good choice for a couple who plans to stay in their cabin.

Oceanview Cabins Blocked by Equipment or Steelwork

Cabin 1460 and 1473 on Deck 1 and family harbor cabin 2458 and 2475 on Deck 2 have window washing machines positioned on the exterior side of the glass.

Cabin 2478 and 2493 on Deck 2 have a window facing towards the aft and looking out to a steel deck that is not accessible to the passengers as it is meant for crew members only.

On Deck 3, there are ocean view cabins 3229, 3232, 3233, 3236, 3237, 3240, 3241, 3244, 3245, 3248, 3249, and 3252 that are behind a solid steel panel rail. You can see over it standing up. Sitting down, the view disappears completely.

Cloud 9 Spa Cabins with Blocked Forward Windows

Cabins 11201 to 11204 located on Deck 11 and 14201 to 14204 on Deck 14 represent obstructions to Cloud 9 Spa oceanview staterooms, as they have forward facing windows obstructed by the same walkway mentioned above. These cabins are marked as obstructed by Carnival on their deck plans, thus making the issue known during the reservation process.

Suite 14205 and 14206 from Cloud 9 Spa represent both issues at once; the suite has a fully metal rail obstructing the view while sitting on the balcony, as well as the forward facing window obstructed by the walkway.

Junior suites 9205 and 9206 on Deck 9 possess both characteristics; the balcony is partially obstructed by a bulkhead of the vessel, and the forward window provides the view of the walkway.

Carnival Horizon Rooms to Avoid Under the Lido Deck

Deck 10 holds the Beach Pool, the Tides Pool, Guy's Burger Joint, BlueIguana Cantina, the Lido Marketplace buffet, Pizzeria del Capitano, Seafood Shack, Tides Bar, the BlueIguana Tequila Bar and the RedFrog Rum Bar. Every one of those venues generates noise, and Deck 9 sits directly underneath.

Midship and aft cabins on Deck 9 are the ones to skip. The complaints are consistent across Carnival's Vista-class ships: deck chairs dragged across the floor above from around 6am, crew hosing and cleaning the pool area before breakfast, and live music from the poolside bars running into the evening.

Deck 8 is the better choice. It has cabins above it and cabins below it, which is the quietest sandwich on any large cruise ship.

Deck 11 Cabins Below WaterWorks, SportSquare and the Gym

Deck 12 carries the Dr. Seuss WaterWorks water park, the Carnival Seaside Theater outdoor screen, the SkyTrack jogging track, The Clubhouse with mini-bowling, SkyCourt, the Cloud 9 Spa and the fitness center. All of it sits above Deck 11 cabins.

Forward Deck 11 cabins sit under the fitness center. Weights hit the floor from early morning, and classes often start before 7am. Mid and aft Deck 11 cabins sit under the water park and the outdoor screen, which plays films into the night.

Deck 11 also generates noise at its own level. Camp Ocean, Dr. Seuss Bookville, the outdoor playground, the Bandstand and two specialty restaurants share the deck with cabins. Rooms near those entrances see constant daytime traffic, most of it children moving between activities.

Cabins to Avoid Near Bars, Lounges and Theatres

Deck 5 Havana Cabins

Deck 5 is the busiest deck on Carnival Horizon and the only cabins on it are Havana categories. Those rooms are surrounded by the upper level of the Liquid Lounge, Piano Bar 88, RedFrog Pub and Brewery, Alchemy Bar, Ocean Plaza, Plaza Bar, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse, Bonsai Sushi and the Havana Bar with its own pool and whirlpools.

Havana Cabana rooms at the aft open straight onto the Havana pool patio. That patio is the reason people pay extra for these cabins, and it is also why the noise arrives late. Piano Bar 88 and the Havana Bar both run past midnight.

One more filter: Carnival applies a minimum age of 12 to Havana staterooms. Families travelling with younger children should look at Family Harbor on Deck 2 instead.

Deck 6 Forward Cabins

Deck 6 holds Circle C, the Warehouse Video Arcade, the Carnival Multiplex with its IMAX screen and the Thrill Theater. Forward cabins on this deck sit close to those entrances. The arcade and the teen club both run late, and the corridor outside carries teenagers moving between them.

Deck 3 Cabins

Deck 3 has Guest Services, the Horizon Lobby Bar, the atrium stage and both main dining rooms. The handful of cabins here sit between those venues. Atrium music runs into the evening and the Guest Services queue forms before 7am on port days.

Cabins Near Elevators, Stairwells and Laundrettes

Noise from the elevators aboard Carnival Horizon is caused by the passengers and not the equipment. This is due to the crowds at the lobbies, talking as they wait and carrying their chats into the corridor even at 2 am.

Cabins closest to stairwells include 1357, 1361, 1412 and 1429 on Deck 1; 6354, 6355, 6358, 6359, 6421, 6424, 6461, 6464, 6467 and 6472 on Deck 6; 7348, 7351, 7404, 7411, 7446 and 7453 on Deck 7; 8347, 8348, 8423, 8426, 8461 and 8466 on Deck 8; and 9356, 9357, 9427, 9431, 9464 and 9471 on Deck 9.

Carnival Horizon also has self-service laundrettes on every cabin deck, open from 6:30am to midnight. The doors are heavy and they bang. Check the deck plan for the laundry symbol and count at least three cabins of separation.

Connecting Cabins to Avoid If You Value Privacy

A connecting door is a door, not a wall. Voices, televisions and alarm clocks travel through it far more easily than through standard cabin partitions. Connecting rooms are excellent for families splitting across two cabins and poor for anyone sharing a wall with strangers.

Interior connecting cabins appear in categories 4A and 4B on Deck 1, 4B, 4C and FA on Deck 2, 4C on Deck 3 including 3224 and 3228, 4D and 4E on Deck 6, 4E and 4F on Deck 7, 4F and 4G on Deck 8, 4G and 4H on Deck 9, and 4H on Deck 10 including 10246 and 10250.

Oceanview connecting pairs include 1214 with 1218 and 1215 with 1219 on Deck 1, plus several deluxe oceanview rooms on Decks 1, 2 and 3.

Balcony connecting cabins include cove balcony and Family Harbor cove categories on Deck 2, cabins 5228 and 5232 on Deck 5, and standard balcony categories on Decks 6 through 11.

Carnival Cruises marks connecting rooms with a symbol on the deck plan. Check for it before you confirm.

Forward and Aft Cabins if You Feel Motion

Cabins at the bow pitch up and down more than anywhere else on the ship. They also sit near the anchor and bow thrusters, which run loud during early morning docking. If you are sensitive to motion or you sleep late on port days, avoid forward cabins on any deck.

Cabins at the stern sit above the propulsion pods. The view from an aft balcony on Carnival Horizon is one of the best on the ship, and the trade is a low background vibration that is most noticeable at night and at higher speeds.

Midship cabins on Decks 6, 7 and 8 give you the least movement. That band is the safest choice for anyone prone to seasickness.

Cove Balconies: Read This Before You Book

Cove balconies sit on Deck 2, cut into the hull rather than hanging off it. The walls are steel, the rail is solid, and the space stays shaded for most of the day.

These are not bad cabins, just divisive ones. Guests who want privacy and shade tend to love them. Guests who want to sunbathe or see a wide horizon tend to regret the booking. They also sit close to the waterline, so expect sea spray on rough days.

• Midship balcony on Decks 7 and 8. Cabins above and below, minimal motion, short walk to the elevators without sitting on top of them.
• Aft-view extended balcony on Decks 8 and 9. Larger balcony and a wake view. Accept the light vibration.
• Premium vista balcony on Decks 8 and 9. Extra square footage in the same quiet band of the ship.
• Cloud 9 Spa balcony on Decks 11 and 14. Spa access included. Choose rooms away from the forward windows.
• Family Harbor on Deck 2. Lounge access and family-sized rooms. Avoid 2458, 2475, 2478 and 2493.
• Cove balcony midship on Deck 2. Quiet and shaded, if the enclosed feel suits you.

How to Check Any Carnival Horizon Cabin Before You Book

• Open Carnival's official deck plan and find the exact cabin number, not just the category.
• Look at the deck above and the deck below that cabin. This single step catches most noise problems.
• Check for the obstructed-view marker on the plan.
• Count the doors between your cabin and the nearest elevator lobby, stairwell and laundrette.
• Look for the connecting-stateroom symbol.
• Search the cabin number in cruiser forums. Guests post balcony photos that show exactly what the view looks like.

One Caveat on Ship Changes

The most recent dry dock of Carnival Horizon was in 2022. The publication date of the upcoming refurbishment of this ship differs among sources; the earliest date would be the middle of 2026, while some sources say it will be in spring 2027. Moreover, the Carnival Corporation has changed their dry dock schedule at least once.

Carnival Horizon operates from Miami on six and eight-day cruises to the Caribbean islands up until the spring of 2027, and then she will shift to Galveston. Consider all of the cabin numbers in this review as initial and verify them based on the current deck plan on your booking date.
