If you want the short answer before the detail: skip the 4J interior cabins with obstructed picture windows on Decks 3, 6 and 7; skip the porthole (PT) and small interior (1A) cabins on Decks 1 and 2; skip anything sitting directly beneath the Lido Deck 9 pool, buffet and bar cluster; skip the Deck 6 cabins stacked above the Promenade Deck casino and piano bar; skip cabins with connecting doors unless your group has booked both; and if you are motion-sensitive, skip the far-forward and far-aft staterooms on every deck.

This is not to say that you shouldn't travel. The Carnival Radiance is indeed an enjoyable ship, which is just a 2000s-era hull that operates short, energy-filled cruises, and for that reason, the importance of cabin placement is much greater than on a week-long cruise. A wrong selection will mean losing a third of your vacation on the three-day Ensenada cruise. In this article, we will walk through all the Carnival Radiance cabins that should be avoided deck by deck and highlight the staterooms worth considering instead.

Why Cabin Choice Matters so Much on this Ship

Carnival Radiance carries roughly 2,900 guests at double occupancy and up to about 3,475 when every berth is filled, served by around 1,040 crew across 101,509 gross tons and 893 feet of hull. There are 13 passenger decks, 10 of which hold staterooms, and 1,448 cabins in total.

The vessel started its journey in 2000 as the Carnival Victory, the third of the Destiny class troika of ships, and came out of a dry dock costing $200 million in 2021 with a brand-new identity, a red, white, and blue hull, and a refreshed list of venues on board. An additional dry dock maintenance took place in September 2024. This extensive remodeling resulted in an interior from 2021 being added to the original hull from 2000.

Radiance sails year-round from Long Beach, California, mostly on 3-, 4- and 5-night Baja Mexico itineraries calling at Ensenada and Catalina Island, with longer runs occasionally adding Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán or Puerto Vallarta. Short sailings draw a livelier, later-night crowd than two-week voyages do, so noise is the single biggest complaint you will read in cabin reviews.

Carnival's two-character category codes tell you almost everything. The first character is the cabin type: 1 is a small interior, 4 an interior, 6 an oceanview, 7 a cove balcony, 8 a balcony and 9 a premium balcony. The second character signals location, with A generally the least desirable and later letters better.

One trap on Radiance: 4J is not a normal interior. It is an interior with a picture window whose view is obstructed. It looks like an upgrade on the booking page and prices like a bargain, and it is the single most common source of disappointment on this ship.

The 4J cabins on Decks 3, 6 and 7

On Deck 3 (Lobby), the 4J cabins usually tagged as problem areas are 3112, 3115, 3116, 3119, 3120, 3123, 3124, 3127, 3128, 3131, 3132, 3135, 3136, 3139, 3140 and 3143. These sit at lifeboat and tender level. You get daylight and a large pane of glass, and you get a view of white fibreglass hull, davits and rigging.

On Deck 6 (Upper) cabins 6201–6206 and Deck 7 (Empress) cabins 7201–7206, the issue is different and worse for privacy. These forward cabins look out onto a small open observation area that any guest can walk onto. Passengers stand a metre from your glass at sail-away. Most people who book these end up keeping the curtain shut for the entire cruise, which defeats the purpose of paying for a window.

Porthole and small interior cabins on Decks 1 and 2

Category PT cabins — 1209, 1210, 1214 and 1215 on Deck 1, plus 2220 and 2221 on Deck 2 — have two small portholes rather than a window. They admit a little light and no real view. Carnival markets them as characterful; in practice they are dim.

Category 1A small interiors — 1201, 1202, 1205 and 1206 on Deck 1, and 2211, 2212, 2216 and 2217 on Deck 2 — are the smallest rooms aboard, with upper and lower Pullman berths rather than a convertible king. Two adults will find them tight; four will find them impossible.

Oceanview and balcony cabins with hardware in the way

Deck 2 category 6B cabins 2428 and 2429 have the window-washing gondola cradle parked outside the glass. Deck 10 category 8P cabins 1001 and 1002 have a solid steel balcony railing rather than glass, so the view from a seated position is largely metal. And on Deck 8 (Verandah), the first few forward balconies lose part of their forward sightline to the ship's bridge wing.

Deck 8 cabins beneath the Lido Deck

This is the classic mistake. Lido Deck 9 holds the main pool and whirlpools, the aft Siren's Pool, Guy's Burger Joint, BlueIguana Cantina, Lido Marketplace with The Deli, Seafood Shack, Pizzeria del Capitano and Big Chicken, plus the BlueIguana Tequila Bar and RedFrog Rum Bar. All of it sits on a hard deck directly above Deck 8 balconies.

The useful detail most guides omit: cabins 8288 and forward on the port side, and 8289 and forward on the starboard side, have cabins both above and below them. Those are the protected ones. Deck 8 cabins numbered aft of that pair are the ones under open public deck, and they get 5:30 a.m. deck washing, chair dragging and trolley wheels, followed by fourteen hours of music.

Lido Deck 9 cabins near the pool and bars 

The same logic runs one deck up. On Deck 9, cabins 9271/9272 and forward sit between cabins above and below and are comparatively insulated. Cabins in the 9280s and 9290s sit closest to the midship pool deck, the two signature bars and the walkway funnelling guests to the buffet. Expect music from mid-morning until late, and expect it loudest on sea days.

Also worth knowing: the self-service launderette sits across from cabins 9268 and 9270. Door slams and tumble dryers run well past midnight.

Deck 6 cabins above the Promenade entertainment block

Promenade Deck 5 midship is where Radiance keeps its late-night energy: the 484-seat Radiance Casino and Casino Bar, Piano Bar 88, Alchemy Bar, RedFrog Pub, SkyBox Sports Bar, The Warehouse arcade and Cherry on Top. One deck below, on Atlantic Deck 4 midship, sits the Limelight Lounge, which hosts the Punchliner Comedy Club and its late adult sets.

Here is the part that trips people up. Deck 5 has no midship cabins and Deck 4 has no cabins at all, so the nearest staterooms above this entire entertainment block are the midship cabins on Deck 6 (Upper). If you are booking on Deck 6, pull up the deck plan and check what is directly beneath you. Piano bar singalongs and casino noise carry through a single deck easily, and both run past 1 a.m.

Deck 5 aft cabins

Deck 5's only staterooms run roughly 5301–5347, all aft, in categories 4D interior, 6D oceanview, 8M aft-view extended balcony and ES extended balcony grand suite. The aft balconies here are wonderful in principle — wide wake views, deeper verandas — but they sit above the aft dining room on Decks 3 and 4, beside the aft stair and lift lobby, and close enough to the funnel to collect soot on the railing. They also transmit propeller vibration during docking.

Cabins beside lifts, stairwells and service doors

Cruise regulars flag these Radiance cabins for foot traffic and machinery hum: Deck 1's 1390, 1393, 1402 and 1405; Deck 2's 2444 and 2445; Deck 5's 5335, 5336, 5340 and 5341; Deck 6's 6402, 6424, 6429, 6432, 6451 and 6459; Deck 7's 7394, 7416 and 7419; and Deck 8's 8404 and 8407.

Lift lobbies on a three-night party cruise are not quiet at 2 a.m., and moving two or three cabins along the corridor costs nothing.

Cabins near crew access points

Lower-deck cabins on Riviera 1 and Main 2, particularly forward, sit closest to crew corridors, provisioning routes and service lifts. You may hear trolleys before dawn and occasionally catch galley or laundry smells. Carnival's deck plans do not label crew areas clearly, so look for unmarked hatched blocks adjacent to guest corridors.

Far-forward staterooms

Forward cabins on any deck feel pitch most acutely — the up-and-down motion as the bow meets swell. On the Pacific run down to Ensenada and Cabo, winter and early spring crossings can be genuinely lumpy. Forward cabins on the higher decks amplify this, because height increases the arc of movement.

Far-aft staterooms

Aft cabins trade pitch for vibration. They sit above the propellers and stern thrusters, so the shudder is most noticeable during manoeuvring — which on a Long Beach turnaround means an early-morning arrival that will wake you. The 8M aft-view extended balcony cabins on Decks 5, 6 and 7 are the ones affected.

Decks 1 and 2 near the engine casing

Riviera 1 and Main 2 are nearest to the engine rooms. There will be some low frequency hum and slight vibration from the floor whilst moving, especially at speed and when maneuvering. Some guests will find this soothing; light sleepers will not.

If you are a sufferer of motion sickness, the solution remains exactly the same for every cruise ship ever built; choose midship cabins on middle and upper decks, preferably with a view, so that you can see the horizon. The midships area on decks 6, 7 and 8 is the ideal choice on Radiance.

The Deck 10 and Deck 11 trade-off

Deck 10 (Panorama) holds category 8P balcony and 4S spa interior cabins. It also holds Carnival WaterWorks, the Carnival Seaside Theater screen, Guy's Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse and Cucina del Capitano. Directly above, on Deck 11 (Spa), sit the Cloud 9 Spa, fitness centre, beauty salon, jogging track, shuffleboard and SportSquare. Deck 10 cabins therefore get waterslide shrieks and poolside films from one side and treadmills and joggers from above, starting around 6 a.m.

Deck 11's own spa cabins in categories 8S and 4S have genuine perks — spa access, priority treatment bookings — but two caveats apply. Cabins 1115–1122 have connecting doors, and the 4S category is an interior cabin at a spa premium, meaning you pay extra for a windowless room.

The connecting doors are also lighter compared to the bulkhead and their locks make rattling sounds during a swell. Book them consciously with your family members in the connecting cabin or better still not use them at all.

• Interior: Deck 1 cabins 1204-1208; Deck 3 cabins 3118-3122, 3121-3125, 3132-3136 and 3135-3139; select interior cabins from Decks 5 and 6
• Balcony: Deck 5 aft view extended balconies 5346-5347; Deck 11 spa cabins 1115-1122
• Oceanview: select cabins from Deck 1 category 6A and 6B and Deck 2 category 6B and 6C cabins

Interior cabins suffer most here. With no exterior noise to mask it, everything from the next room comes through clearly.

Which Carnival Radiance cabins should you book instead?

• Balcony categories 8A, 8B and 8C midship on Decks 6, 7 and 8 — the best balance of stability, quiet and price on the ship
• Category 9C Premium Vista Balcony on Decks 6 and 7 — larger verandas, well away from public venues
• Sandwiched cabins — Deck 8 from 8288/8289 forward, and Deck 9 from 9271/9272 forward, have cabins above and below
• Categories 6J and 6K Scenic Oceanview, cabins 9196–9201 — added in the 2021 refit with oversized windows, though check what sits above before committing
• Category 4D or 4E interiors midship on Decks 6 and 7 — if you want the cheapest quiet room rather than the cheapest room

And one booking-mechanics tip: avoid Carnival's guarantee fares (IGT, OVGT, BGT) if cabin position matters to you. They are cheap because the line assigns your room, and the rooms left to assign are usually the ones on this page.

How to check any cabin in five minutes

Ask three questions: is there a public venue directly overhead, is there a public venue directly underneath, and is there a lift lobby, stairwell, launderette or unmarked service block within three cabins? If all three answers are no, book it.

Then read the category code, confirm whether a connecting door is listed, and check the cabin diagram for the bed configuration — a sofa bed or Pullman berth in a small interior changes the room considerably.
