Norwegian Sun Cabins to Avoid: Worst Rooms and Best Alternatives

Which cabins should be avoided on the Norwegian Sun? The ones to beat are the forward staterooms on deck 11 located below the Spinnaker Lounge, the deck 10 cabins situated right above the fitness centre, the pool stage and the Garden Cafe buffet, the deck 8 midship and aft cabins located above the casino, the deck 7 cabins surrounding the Splash Academy and the Entourage teen club, all cabins on the Oslo deck 6A half-deck are inaccessible since there is no elevator, the porthole cabins forward on deck 6 are obstructed, the deck 5 cabins are found adjacent to atrium and the guest gangway, and finally the aft cabins on deck 4 below Deck 5 main dining rooms. All “Sail Away” rates should be put on the same list because they leave the choice of cabins to the cruise line.

Norwegian Sun entered service in 2001. She is 848 feet long, 78,309 gross tons, and carries 1,878 guests at double occupancy with a crew of 906. She is small by modern standards, which is mostly a virtue. It also means there is no spare buffer deck between the cabins and the busy parts of the ship. On Norwegian Sun, a Deck 10 stateroom can share a ceiling with the buffet.

The problem cabins here are predictable. Once you know what sits above and below each block, the deck plan does the work for you.

Before You Book: Norwegian Sun Is Leaving the NCL Fleet

Norwegian cruise line announced in April 2025 that Norwegian Sun and her sister ship Norwegian Sky will leave for the Indian-based Cordelia Cruises on a long-term charter. Sky has already left, having completed her final NCL voyage on 9 September 2026, a nine-night Mediterranean cruise to Piraeus, and is due to commence operations from Mumbai as Cordelia Sky on 23 October 2026. Sun will follow, with her transfer currently scheduled for autumn 2027 and a name change to Cordelia Sun.

In terms of availability, the time window for booking this vessel under NCL’s branding is limited. Sun is wrapping up a Northern Europe season, returning across the Atlantic to New York in mid-October and running her last Caribbean and partial Panama Canal programme out of Miami from early November. Her most recent drydock was in April 2026, following the fleetwide Norwegian Edge refurbishment she received in April 2018. A caution from her sister’s handover: NCL withdrew Sky sailings departing on or after 20 August 2026, weeks ahead of the official transfer date. Expect Sun’s last bookable sailing to fall before the 2027 handover too.

The hull does not change when the name does. Every cabin number and deck relationship below carries over to Cordelia Sun; the venue names, category codes and pricing will not.

Deck 11 (Pool): Forward Staterooms Beneath the Spinnaker Lounge

Cabins to weigh carefully: 1004 to 1015, 1204 to 1215, and Owner’s Suites 1003 and 1203.

This is the only cabin block on the pool deck, and it is squeezed between two problems. Above it, on Deck 12, sits the Spinnaker Lounge; NCL’s own description is the tell, with the music coming up at night and the stage becoming a dance floor. Immediately aft, on the same deck, sit the aerobics studio, the Pulse Fitness Center and the Mandara Spa. There is no quiet neighbour in either direction.

There is a third issue most guides miss. NCL’s designated outdoor smoking area on Norwegian Sun is Deck 12 forward by the bar, with Deck 11 forward port side, by the towel station, as the bad-weather alternative. That is directly outside this block’s port-side cabins.

Being right at the bow, these cabins also feel more pitch than anywhere else on the ship. The two Owner’s Suites are a genuine exception worth paying for, at 828 square feet including a 258 square foot balcony with a hot tub, but their forward-facing balconies are unusable at cruising speed. That is a trade-off, not a mistake.

Deck 10 (Norway): Under the Gym, the Pool Stage and the Buffet

Deck 10 is a good deck with a bad middle. The bridge is forward and the forward staterooms have other staterooms above them. Aft, the ceiling changes.

Roughly 0007 to 0016 and 0207 to 0216 sit directly beneath the aerobics studio and the Pulse Fitness Center. Expect treadmills from early morning and the occasional dropped free weight. Roughly 0019 to 0026 and 0219 to 0226 sit beneath the pool stage and dance floor, which is where deck parties and sail-away music happen.

The worst stretch is from about 0038 to 0064 and 0238 to 0264, along with the inside cabins in the 0121 to 0128 and 0320 to 0328 range. These are under the Garden Cafe buffet, Moderno Churrascaria, the arcade, the Sports Bar and the Great Outdoors Cafe. NCL lists the Sports Bar as a 24-hour eatery, so the quiet window overhead is narrow. Chairs scraping on a hard deck carry straight down.

Deck 8 (Viking): Midship and Aft Cabins Above the Casino

Approximately 8047 to 8073 and 8247 to 8273 are located above the casino, bar and shopping arcade on Deck 7. Norwegian Sun does not have an enclosed casino smoking room as Bliss, Joy and Encore does: under NCL policy, active players are allowed to smoke in the casino itself during gaming hours. Both smoke and noise rise up stairwells and hallways.

One myth to correct: the view from the balconies on Deck 8 is not impeded by hanging lifeboats, which are stationed at Deck 7, below eye level. Yes, you can't see straight down to the waterline, but you can see the horizon clearly. NCL lists their obstructed cabins on Deck 6 only.

Deck 7 (International): Cabins Around Splash Academy and Entourage

The forward part of Deck 7 is unusual. Splash Academy is at the bow and Entourage teen club is located in the middle of the inside cabin block, rather than being set aside.

Cabins 7101 to 7108 and 7301 to 7308 are adjacent to the teen club, sharing a wall with it. While cabins 7001 to 7007 and 7201 to 7207 run alongside Splash Academy, which caters for children aged three to twelve; and Entourage covers thirteen to seventeen. Both operate until late in the evenings on sea days and sailing during school holidays. If you are a party with the children using them you will find that it is a handy arrangement, rather than a problem. However, couples and solo travelers looking for some peace and quiet should look elsewhere.

Oslo Deck 6A: The Cabins No Elevator Reaches

Cabins 6010 to 6024, 6211 to 6225, 6101 to 6109 and 6301 to 6311 sit on Oslo Deck 6A, a half-deck between Decks 6 and 7. NCL’s printed deck plan carries a plain warning: there is no elevator access to Oslo Deck 6A. Reaching these cabins means a flight of stairs, every time, with every bag.

This is a mobility issue rather than a noise one. Guest reports describe the half-deck as quiet, and the cabins are normally sized. If nobody in your party has mobility limits, Oslo Deck 6A can be one of the better value decisions on the ship. If anyone does, avoid it, and note that a Guarantee Oceanview rate draws from Deck 6, so it can land you here without warning.

Deck 6 Forward: The Genuinely Obstructed Portholes

Norwegian Sun’s obstructed views are forward on Deck 6, in the oceanview categories rather than the balcony categories. NCL lists its Obstructed Oceanview cabins at 145 to 172 square feet and on Deck 6 only.

That is a very good deal at a very good price but only if you know what you are getting. So, if you upgraded from an inside cabin to see the sea, be sure to check the category letter and not the word Ocean View.

Deck 5 (Atlantic): Beside the Atrium and the Gangway

Cabins 5012, 5013, 5014, 5212, 5213, 5214 and inside cabin 5103 are located towards the aft on Deck 5 in the forward cabin block which is just in front of the guest entrance, the elevator lobby, the Atrium and the Atrium Cafe and Bar.

The guest entrance where the gangway is deployed (port side). It is also where you can hear announcements on embarkation days (when luggage is being loaded), or where you might get your morning briefing as to where the ship will be on a port day (for provisioning purposes). Music is performed most evenings in the Atrium. The accessible ocean view cabins are 5012, 5013, 5212 and 5213 so if you have booked one of these, you know where you are!

Deck 4 (Biscayne): Lowest Deck, Galley and Bow

Deck 4 holds the cheapest inside and porthole cabins, and has two distinct problem zones. Aft, the starboard cabins from roughly 4228 to 4254 and the inside cabins 4305 to 4314 sit beneath Deck 5’s two main dining rooms and their service areas. Galleys start early and finish late, and the trolley traffic is relentless. The plan also shows no passenger cabins at all on the port side aft of 4038; that stretch is given over to the medical centre and crew space. Being the lowest passenger deck, this whole area picks up more engine and propulsion vibration than anywhere else with a guest bed in it.

Forward, cabins 4001 to 4007 and 4201 to 4207 sit at the very bow, closest to the anchor windlass and bow thrusters. On a port-intensive itinerary you will hear them most mornings, often before six. None of this makes Deck 4 unbookable, and the price reflects it.

Sail Away and Guarantee Rates: The Cabin You Do Not Choose

Norwegian Sun sells guarantee categories across every cabin type, identified by an X in the category code: IX for inside, OX for oceanview, BX for balcony and MX for Club Balcony Suite. NCL’s own booking copy is blunt about what you are agreeing to. A Guarantee Balcony guarantees a balcony stateroom or better, the view may be fully or partially obstructed, and your stateroom may be on any deck and assigned as late as one day before embarkation. For Guarantee Oceanview, NCL spells out that the window may be fully obstructed, partially obstructed, a porthole or a picture window. Guarantee Inside is also excluded from promotional rates and offers.

The saving is real, and so is the risk, because NCL’s listings show which deck each guarantee draws from. Guarantee Inside comes off Deck 4, the lowest passenger deck. Guarantee Oceanview comes off Deck 6, home to both the obstructed portholes and the stairs-only Oslo half-deck. Guarantee Balcony comes off Deck 8, Guarantee Club Balcony Suite off Deck 11. For a solo traveler on a short cruise, that is a sensible gamble. For anyone with mobility needs, seasickness or a low tolerance for noise, pay the difference and pick the room.

Connecting Cabins and Other Small Traps

A connecting door is a hollow panel, not a wall. Conversation, television and alarm clocks pass through it clearly. Unless you are travelling with the people next door, choose a cabin without the connecting symbol on the deck plan.

Cabins located on a stair or elevator lobby have less convenience but more footsteps and noises outside the cabin. Cabins on the third, fourth, or fifth deck are the ones where owners have to consider pulling down beds that take the floor space even when they are not used, which may be problematic as NCL states the smallest cabin size inside the ship is 145 square feet. The ship’s best views are at the aft facing balconies on the second to seventh decks (8077-8079, 8277-8279), but they are also the noisiest because of the propeller and the vibration of the engine. Additionally, smoking is prohibited in all staterooms, and the balconies are considered the part of the cabin, so a balcony is not an option for those who want to smoke.

Where to Book Instead on Norwegian Sun

The single best answer is Deck 9, the Fjord deck, midship and aft. Along that stretch Deck 9 has staterooms above and below, so no galley, gym, buffet or lounge sits in the vertical stack. Only its forward end differs, sitting under the bridge, which is quiet anyway. Midship also means the least pitch and roll.

Deck 8 balconies forward of midship are next best, situated above the Deck 7 cabin block instead of the casino. On Deck 10, the forward cabins from approximately 0001 to 0006 and 0201 to 0206 have staterooms above them instead of public rooms, an isolated pocket on an otherwise busy deck. If the view is more important than the stillness, an aft-facing balcony on Deck 8, 9 or 10 provides the ship’s wake from your own chair.
