Viking Reveals Names of Its Next Two Ocean Cruise Ships

Viking has announced the names of its next two ocean cruise ships: Viking Leda and Viking Vega. Both vessels are currently being built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy and will each accommodate 998 guests. The Viking Leda is expected to join the fleet in late 2028, while the Viking Vega will follow in mid-2029.

Before these ships arrive, Viking is already scheduled to expand its fleet with three new ocean vessels between 2026 and 2028: Viking Libra, Viking Astrea and Viking Lyra.

The Viking Leda is set to begin service in December 2028 with a winter season in the Mediterranean. Guests can choose from cruises lasting eight to 16 days, departing from ports across Greece, Italy, and Spain. These itineraries will visit popular destinations throughout the Mediterranean, Aegean Sea, and Atlantic region, including the Greek Islands, the French Riviera, and Morocco.

The Viking Vega will make its debut in June 2029, also starting in the Mediterranean. After spending its first few weeks sailing Southern Europe, the ship will head to the British Isles in mid-July. Its inaugural season includes voyages departing from well-known ports such as Civitavecchia (Rome), Barcelona, Bergen, and several locations across the United Kingdom.

Once delivered, the Viking Leda and Viking Vega will become the 17th and 18th ocean ships that Fincantieri has built for Viking. Like the rest of the fleet, they will have a gross tonnage of approximately 47,000 tons and follow the elegant Scandinavian-inspired design introduced with Viking Star, the company’s first ocean ship launched in 2015.

Viking’s future fleet expansion doesn’t stop there. The cruise line currently has nine additional ships on order, with deliveries planned through 2031. Among the most anticipated are Viking Astrea and Viking Lyra, expected in 2027 and 2028. These vessels are designed to become the cruise industry’s first hydrogen-powered ships, using containerized hydrogen fuel technology that enables zero-emission operations under certain conditions.

The company is also preparing to grow its expedition fleet. Two new expedition vessels are scheduled to arrive in 2030 and 2031, joining Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris as part of Viking’s expanding portfolio of exploration-focused cruises.
